Understanding Wrist Pain
Wrist pain is a common issue that can significantly affect your ability to perform daily activities such as typing, lifting, and even gripping objects. There are various wrist pain causes, each requiring a tailored treatment approach. Some common causes include:
- Carpal tunnel syndrome: One of the most common causes of wrist pain, carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve is compressed as it travels through the wrist. This condition often leads to pain, numbness, and tingling in the wrist and hand.
- Tendonitis: Overuse of the wrist tendons can lead to inflammation, resulting in pain, stiffness, and limited movement.
- Wrist sprains: A wrist sprain occurs when the ligaments in the wrist are stretched or torn, often due to a fall or sudden twisting motion. This injury can lead to swelling and significant discomfort.
- Arthritis: Both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis can affect the wrist joint, causing chronic pain, stiffness, and swelling.
At Gramercy Physical Therapy, our treatment plans for wrist pain are designed to address the specific cause of your discomfort and provide effective, long-term relief.
Common Hand Pain Causes
Hand pain can stem from a variety of causes, ranging from injuries to degenerative conditions. Some common hand pain causes include:
- Trigger finger: This condition occurs when the tendons in the fingers become inflamed, causing the finger to catch or lock when bent. It can lead to pain and difficulty moving the affected finger.
- Arthritis: Arthritis can also affect the joints in the hand, leading to pain, swelling, and reduced mobility.
- Fractures or dislocations: Trauma to the hand can result in broken bones or dislocated joints, causing immediate pain and long-term stiffness if not treated properly.
- Tendinitis: Similar to the wrist, the tendons in the hand can become inflamed from overuse or repetitive motions, leading to pain and limited function.
At Gramercy Physical Therapy, we provide specialized treatment for all types of hand pain, focusing on restoring mobility and function while reducing pain.

Wrist and Hand Pain
When wrist and hand pain occur together, it can significantly impact your ability to perform tasks that require fine motor skills, such as writing, typing, or even holding a cup. Conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, or tendonitis can affect both areas, leading to widespread discomfort. Our team works closely with you to understand the root cause of your wrist and hand pain and develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses your specific needs.
Pain in the Back of the Hand
Pain in the back of the hand can be caused by a variety of conditions, including tendonitis, arthritis, or trauma to the area. This type of pain may worsen with activities that involve gripping or lifting, and it can be accompanied by swelling, stiffness, or weakness. At Gramercy Physical Therapy, we provide targeted therapy for pain in the back of the hand, focusing on reducing inflammation and improving mobility through a combination of manual therapy, exercises, and therapeutic modalities.
Thumb and Wrist Pain
Thumb and wrist pain is often associated with conditions such as De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, a type of tendonitis that affects the tendons along the thumb side of the wrist. This condition can cause pain, swelling, and difficulty moving the thumb and wrist, particularly during activities that involve pinching or gripping. Our therapists at Gramercy Physical Therapy offer specialized therapy for hand and wrist pain, including targeted exercises and manual techniques to alleviate pain and restore function.

Comprehensive Treatment for Hand and Wrist Pain
At Gramercy Physical Therapy, our approach to treating hand and wrist pain is holistic and tailored to each patient’s specific condition. Our treatment plans may include:
- Manual therapy: Hands-on techniques to relieve tension in the muscles and tendons, improve joint mobility, and reduce pain.
- Stretching and strengthening exercises: Customized exercises designed to improve flexibility and strengthen the muscles around the wrist and hand, reducing the risk of future injuries.
- Joint mobilization: Techniques to restore proper movement and alignment in the wrist and hand joints, promoting pain relief and improved function.
- Ultrasound and electrical stimulation: These non-invasive modalities help reduce inflammation and promote healing in the soft tissues of the wrist and hand.
- Heat and cold therapy: Alternating between heat and cold treatments can help alleviate pain, reduce swelling, and improve mobility in the hand and wrist.
- Ergonomic education: We provide guidance on how to adjust your workstation, tools, and techniques to prevent future wrist and hand pain.

EXCELLENT Based on 157 reviews Posted on Sara DolanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I recently had an evaluation at Gramercy PT and was disappointed with my experience. During my appointment, the provider was rushed and was simultaneously treating another patient. As a result, I didn't feel that my assessment was thorough. I was seeking care for a running-related ankle issue, yet my gait and walking mechanics were not evaluated. I don't recommend using them for running related issues, because they don't have a treadmill. Additionally, I was misquoted regarding the cost of treatment. At the conclusion of my appointment, I was informed that the session cost was $50 more than what I had been quoted. This discrepancy was unexpected and frustrating. Overall, I didn't feel that the level of care or communication met appropriate professional standards. Update 3/16/2026: Gramercy PT contacted me and remediated the issue. I appreciate their professionalism and desire to make this right.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are sorry to hear that your experience did not meet your expectations. At Gramercy Physical Therapy, we strive to provide attentive, high-quality care, and we regret that you left feeling otherwise. Regarding your concern about feeling rushed, our model is designed to provide individualized attention, scheduling no more than two patients per hour so that each patient receives dedicated 30 minute one-on-one time with the therapist. While brief overlaps can occasionally occur, it is never our intention for a patient to feel that their evaluation was incomplete. With respect to running-related injuries and gait analysis, we routinely treat runners and assess biomechanics, stability and alignment. While we do not rely on treadmill analysis, especially while injured, gait and movement patterns are evaluated based on the therapist’s clinical judgment and the stage of injury. That said, we understand that you expected a specific type of assessment and we regret that this was not clearly communicated during your visit. Regarding the cost miscommunication, our team always verifies and explains benefits prior to your initial visit, but if there was any miscommunication, that is something we take seriously and would like to know right away to make it right. We value professionalism and transparency and we would appreciate the opportunity to review your concerns personally and see how we can make this right. Please contact our office directly or provide a good time for us to call.Posted on Nicole De SantisTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My father, who is in his 80's, has been going to Gramercy PT for over a year now and I can't say enough how helpful they have been to him. I also appreciate how patient and kind the staff here is.
Owner's reply
Thank you so much for the kind words, Nicole! It has been an absolute pleasure working with your father over the past year. We truly value the trust you both place in us, and our team always looks forward to his visits. We’re so glad to hear that our patient and dedicated approach has made a positive difference for him!Posted on Yang ShenTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I’ve been having chronical pains for years and had sought all sorts of treatment both in Hong Kong and NYC (physical therapy, acupuncture, deep tissue massage, chiro therapy) very regularly with limited results. I knew many different approaches adopted by different physical therapists (trained in Australia, US or UK) because I had to try so many. I’ve been able to stop trying new therapists after I came to this place. Tessa’s approach is very practicable for people with busy schedules and yet effective. I am so pleased to feel the results that I introduced this place to my husband and our uncle as well. For what it is worth, the first session may feel really slow (I was a bit unsure after first session if it was going to be helpful), so people who are seriously seeking PT may want to try 2 or 3 sessions to determine if it’s effective for them.
Owner's reply
We truly appreciate the recommendation, Yang! It’s great to hear that after trying so many different methods, Tessa’s expertise provided the breakthrough you needed. We aim to make our treatments as effective and manageable as possible for our patients' lifestyles. Thank you for the shout-out regarding the first few sessions—we agree that building a foundation is key to long-term relief. We look forward to seeing you and your family again soon!Posted on Tony CarnesiTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I needed serious PT after a wrist surgery. I will be playing guitar harder than ever soon! Gene runs a tight ship and Anna knows her way around my right arm very well. I am in good hands here at Gramercy Physical Therapy! I recommend them highly!
Owner's reply
That’s music to our ears, Tony! 🎸 We’re so glad Anna could help you get back on track after your surgery. We can't wait to hear about you shredding on the guitar again soon! Thanks for the shout-out to Gene and the rest of the team. 🤘Posted on Aanchal ParmarTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I don’t know where to begin with this review. I went to see Tessa around 2022 when no doctors could help me. I have tried PT at other places but no one seemed to see why I was in so much pain. I was 26 and in the middle of dental school. With Gods grace I met Tessa and I can truly say she saved my life. I haven’t seen Tessa since 2024 because I moved out of the city but I think about her and this practice sooooo often and as a dentist I hope to change someone’s life as how she has changed mine. She worked on me every session with so much care, she found out what my issue and root of pain was. I was in really bad shape when I met her where certain movements would cause radiating pain. I would go to my own clinic using a tens machine treating patients and now solely because of Tessa I no longer need to do that. The exceptional care and gift and knowledge Tessa has is unmatched in any field of healthcare I have experienced. Thank You Tessa and the Gramercy team for everything you have done for me and changed my life. Absolutely phenomenal how much they care for their patients
Owner's reply
This is such a moving and powerful review, Aanchal. Thank you so much for sharing your story! 🙏 We are honestly touched to hear about the impact Tessa had on your life and your career. That is such a huge achievement, and we couldn’t be happier for you! Tessa truly prides herself on finding the root cause of pain rather than just treating the symptoms, and she will be so heartened to hear that her care inspired the way you treat your own patients today. We miss having you here in the city, but we wish you the absolute best with your practice. Thank you for being such an inspiration to our team! ❤️Posted on Jennifer GuTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
