At Gramercy Physical Therapy, we specialize in providing comprehensive elbow pain treatment for individuals of all ages in Manhattan and across New York City. Elbow pain can significantly impact daily life, whether you’re dealing with discomfort from overuse, injury, or chronic conditions. Our team of experienced therapists is dedicated to diagnosing the root cause of your pain and implementing a personalized treatment plan that will help you regain strength, mobility, and function.
Common Causes of Elbow Pain
There are many potential elbow pain causes, each requiring specific therapeutic approaches for effective treatment. Some common causes include:
Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis): This condition is caused by overuse of the forearm muscles, typically from repetitive motions. It results in pain on the outside of the elbow, often affecting athletes, especially tennis players, as well as individuals in professions requiring repetitive arm movements.
Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis): Similar to tennis elbow but affecting the inside of the elbow, golfer’s elbow is caused by repetitive stress to the tendons on the inner part of the elbow. Individuals who engage in activities that involve gripping or lifting may experience this condition. At Gramercy Physical Therapy, we offer targeted therapy for golfer’s elbow to reduce pain and restore function.
Elbow bursitis: Inflammation of the bursa, a small fluid-filled sac located near the elbow joint, can cause swelling and pain in the elbow area, particularly when pressure is applied.
Elbow sprains or strains: Overstretching or tearing of the ligaments or muscles around the elbow joint due to injury can lead to pain, swelling, and reduced range of motion.
Arthritis: Osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis can affect the elbow joint, causing pain, stiffness, and inflammation that worsens with movement.
Pain in the Elbow Joint
Pain in the elbow joint can make it difficult to perform even simple tasks, such as lifting or gripping objects. Whether the pain is sharp, dull, or constant, it’s important to address it early to prevent further damage. Our physical therapy for treatment of elbow pain focuses on improving joint function while reducing discomfort and inflammation.
Our treatment for pain in the elbow joint includes a variety of techniques, such as manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, and joint mobilization, all designed to promote healing and improve flexibility. Our therapists will work closely with you to understand the cause of your elbow pain and create a personalized plan to restore joint health.
Inside Elbow Pain
Pain inside the elbow is often associated with golfer’s elbow, but it can also be caused by other conditions such as tendinitis or nerve compression. This type of pain may worsen with activities that require gripping, lifting, or bending the arm. At Gramercy Physical Therapy, we assess your condition thoroughly and provide targeted treatment for pain inside the elbow, helping you regain strength and prevent further injury.
Pain in the Elbow Joint
Tennis elbow pain is one of the most common forms of elbow discomfort, particularly among athletes and individuals who perform repetitive arm motions. The pain is typically felt on the outer part of the elbow and may worsen with activities such as lifting or gripping objects.
Our team offers specialized therapy for tennis elbow that combines manual therapy, stretching, and strengthening exercises to reduce inflammation and pain while improving muscle balance and endurance.
At Gramercy Physical Therapy, we focus on both reducing pain and addressing the underlying factors contributing to tennis elbow pain, such as muscle imbalances or improper technique. Our approach ensures that you not only recover from the pain but also prevent future occurrences.
Comprehensive Elbow Pain Treatment
At Gramercy Physical Therapy, our approach to treating elbow pain is comprehensive and tailored to each patient’s unique needs. Our treatment plans may include:
- Manual therapy: Hands-on techniques to relieve muscle tension, improve joint mobility, and promote circulation in the elbow area.
- Stretching and strengthening exercises: We focus on exercises that improve flexibility and strengthen the muscles around the elbow, reducing the risk of future injury.
- Joint mobilization: Techniques to improve the movement and alignment of the elbow joint, addressing any restrictions that may be contributing to pain.
- Ultrasound and electrical stimulation: These modalities help reduce inflammation and promote healing in the soft tissues of the elbow.
- Heat and cold therapy: Alternating between heat and cold can help reduce pain, decrease swelling, and improve mobility in the elbow joint.
- Education and prevention strategies: We provide guidance on how to modify activities and improve posture to prevent recurring elbow pain. This may include adjustments to technique or equipment for sports like tennis or golf.
Preventing Elbow Pain
While some elbow pain is caused by injury or overuse, there are steps you can take to prevent discomfort:
- Stretching and strengthening: Regular exercises to strengthen the muscles around the elbow can help reduce the risk of strain and injury.
- Proper technique: Whether you’re playing sports or engaging in physical activities, using the correct technique is essential to preventing conditions like tennis elbow or golfer’s elbow.
- Ergonomics: Ensure that your workstation, tools, and sports equipment are properly adjusted to reduce strain on your elbow joint.
- Rest: Giving your elbow adequate time to rest and recover after activities can help prevent overuse injuries.

EXCELLENT Based on 131 reviews Roberta Gelb2025-01-17Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Don't look anywhere else! I've had experience with a few PT places; some okay and some good. You walk out with a number of exercises to do at home. Each time, I got more exercises until I was so overwhelmed, I didn't do any of them. I didn't know how to compare those places to but now I do and there is no comparison. In other places, the therapist is with you for the first 10 minutes and then you are handed over to someone in training. The next session you may see the same therapist or not. Gramercy Physical Therapy is unlike any other PT experience I've had. The therapists are experienced, knowledgeable and caring. You have a session with one therapist for the appointment. And the best thing? The pain is gone!!!!

Went to gramercy physical therapy for a torn meniscus repair recovery. Originally I worked mainly with Tessa and Gene. They were both great. Then towards the end of my therapy I got to work with the rest of the therapists. It worked out perfectly for me. Everyone is very nice and completely focused and your recovery. I highly recommend gramercy physical therapy for all your pt needs!

The facility is smaller than what you might see at a “chain” PT company, but the care is top-notch. Gene spends time listening to your problems and treating you, rather than rushing through an evaluation and slotting you into a premade program. The location is very convenient as well.
